The Convento de São José (Convent of São José) serves the cultural activity of the municipality of Lagoa, hosting various cultural events and temporary exhibitions during the year.
It was built in the first half of the 18th century with the aim of serving the gathering of women and the reception of children, having operated for about a century under the guidance of a religious order of mendicant nuns.
After the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, the building was converted into a girls' education college, guided by a group of Dominican nuns, operating in this register until the establishment of the Republic.
Its most representative elements are the entrance wheel, the observation tower, with rotula windows, the chapel, whose altar bears an image of St. garden, from an archaeological site in the Porches area, dating from 5000 to 4000 BC.
